Adora is a 37-metre Maldivian liveaboard built in 2014, with 11 en-suite, air-conditioned cabins for up to 21 guests. Six standard cabins sit on the lower deck with twin or double-and-single layouts, there's a superior cabin on the main deck, and four ocean-view doubles on the upper deck. Diving runs from a separate 20-metre dhoni, so tanks, compressors and the noise of kitting up stay off the main boat. Nitrox is free for certified divers, there's camera storage and DIN-compatible tanks, and the boat asks for at least 30 logged dives. That makes sense in the Maldives, where most dives are drift dives in the channels and you'll want to be comfortable with a reef hook and a negative entry. Between dives there's an air-conditioned salon and bar, and a sundeck with cushioned sunbeds. The kitchen mixes Maldivian, Indian, Sri Lankan and international dishes, and stand-up paddleboards and Wi-Fi are on board. The atolls are diveable all year. December to April usually brings the calmest seas and clearest water on the eastern channels, while the wetter months from May to November are the season for big manta numbers on the western side. Adora suits divers who want a well-run, mid-size boat with a proper dhoni set-up rather than a floating resort. Check-in: 11 AM on the arrival date. Check-out: 10 AM on the departure date.

Adora gave us a very balanced first Maldives liveaboard. We had current, calm reef dives, thilas, night diving and long surface intervals on deck. Not every hoped-for animal appeared, and nobody pretended otherwise. The guides worked with the actual conditions, which made the whole trip feel much more genuine.
One small thing I appreciated: the crew remembered how I liked my tank set up after the first day. It sounds minor, but after three dives it makes life much easier.
The longer Southern Atolls journey felt much more like an expedition than the usual Malé-to-Malé itinerary. There was more travelling and the diving could be more demanding, but that was exactly why we booked it. It's better for divers who enjoy channels, open-water pickups and not knowing exactly what the next atoll will feel like.
Great guides, patient dhoni crew and endless food. That's basically the week.
