Do I need Advanced Open Water for a Red Sea liveaboard?
Every operator requires at least Open Water certification to join any liveaboard — that’s a safety baseline, not a beginner test. For the Northern wrecks-and-reefs itinerary specifically, Advanced Open Water becomes the practical minimum once the boat reaches deeper wrecks like the Thistlegorm (16–32m); shallower reef sites and the upper decks of the wrecks stay within Open Water limits. If you’re freshly certified, tell the operator when booking so they can plan your week around what you’re qualified to dive.
What’s the difference between the Northern and Southern (BDE) routes?
The Northern route covers Ras Mohammed, the Straits of Tiran and the wreck sites around Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada — sheltered water, short crossings between sites, and a mix of depths that suits newer divers. The Southern route (Brothers, Daedalus, Elphinstone, often shortened to BDE) means 6–8 hour open-water crossings, deep walls and strong current, chasing oceanic whitetip and hammerhead sharks. Most operators ask for Advanced Open Water and 30–50 logged dives before they’ll take you on BDE.
Will I get seasick on a Red Sea liveaboard?
The Red Sea is generally calm, but conditions do shift, especially in winter when northern Egypt sees more wind. The Northern route’s short hops between sheltered sites make seasickness less of an issue than the Southern route’s long open-water crossings to Brothers or Daedalus. If you’re prone to it, pack sea-sickness medication, request a mid-ship cabin where motion is felt least, and stay on deck in fresh air rather than below.
How many dives should I have logged before a liveaboard?
There’s no universal number — Open Water certification is the baseline most operators check — but a Northern route with wreck penetration options is more comfortable with 15–20 logged dives behind you, since it moves fast: 3–4 dives a day for a full week. If you’re newly certified, look for an operator running a gentler 3–4 night “mini safari” first, or ask us to match you with a boat known for taking newer divers.
What will I actually see on a first Red Sea liveaboard?
