Whale Sharks in Baja California: The Season and the Sites

The season

The season opens on a count, not a date

Most sites tell you 1 October to 30 April. That window is real. It is the period when swimming in the zone is legal — not the period when tours run.

Boats only go out once enough whale sharks are counted inside the zone over several days. Below that number, nothing runs. The 2025/26 season opened in mid-November.

It can also stop mid-season. If the count drops, tours are suspended until the sharks come back. February is the month it usually happens.

Late starts are normal

October rarely opens on time. Do not build a trip around the first week.

Mid-season pauses

Tours have been suspended for weeks at a time. Usually in February.

Capped fleet

A fixed number of licensed boats per slot. Slots run two to three hours.

Book the middle

December to March is the safest bet. The edges are what get cancelled.

The sites

Three places in Baja, three different trips

La Paz gets the attention. It is one of three options, and they run on different calendars.

La Paz Bay coastline, Baja California Sur
Oct–Apr · Day trip
La Paz Bay · El Mogote

A sandbar holds warm, plankton-heavy water. It works as a nursery. The sharks here are juveniles, four to seven metres, feeding at the surface. Twenty minutes out by panga.

Snorkel only Half day No cert needed
Dive boat anchored in the Sea of Cortez
Sep–Nov · Liveaboard
Bahía de los Ángeles

A second aggregation up north. It peaks in autumn, while La Paz is still waiting to open. Remote, so you reach it by boat. Same trip covers the Midriff Islands and sea lions.

Snorkel 7 nights Diving too
Giant oceanic manta at Socorro
Nov–May · Offshore
Socorro · Revillagigedo

The only place in Mexico where whale sharks turn up on scuba. They are a bonus on a manta and shark week, not the reason to go. Advanced certification required.

La Paz peaks December–March. Bahía de los Ángeles peaks September–November.

When to go

Month by month, site by site

Pick the site first, then the month. The two aggregations barely overlap, so there is usually one running somewhere.

The encounter

A morning in the zone

The permit fixes the format, so every licensed operator runs it the same way. Two to three hours. A few swimmers in the water at a time.

The briefing
BEFORE YOU GO

A guide runs the rules first. No touching. No cutting across the animal. Fixed distances, and a limit on how many people enter at once.

Getting in
ON A SIGNAL

The captain spots a fin, then puts the boat ahead of the shark’s line. You slide in on the signal. No jumping, no splashing.

Keeping up
FITNESS HELPS

They move faster than they look. Each pass is a short sprint before the shark pulls away and the boat repositions. Fitter swimmers get more water time.

Photos
GO WIDE

The plankton that draws the sharks also kills visibility. Often a few metres. Shoot wide, get close, and expect green water rather than blue.

Plan around it

The rest of the week

A whale shark tour is half a day, and there is no scuba in it. Nobody flies to Mexico for that alone. So what fills the other six days?

The simple version is a shore-based week in La Paz. Whale sharks one morning. Sea lions at Los Islotes on another. Espíritu Santo reef dives in between. Grey whales in the Pacific lagoons if you are there January to April. Dive site detail is in our La Paz diving guide, and the full species calendar sits in the Baja gentle giants guide.

Prefer to be on a boat? Two options, split by season. Sea of Cortez itineraries run May to November and reach the northern aggregation — the Nautilus Explorer works that route. From November the fleet moves offshore to Socorro. Whether that crossing is worth it from Europe is covered here.

One more thing for mixed groups. Whale sharks, grey whales and mobula schools all work without a certification card. A non-diving partner skips only the reef dives. That is not true of most destinations.

FAQ

Questions we get every week

When exactly is whale shark season in La Paz?
The legal window is 1 October to 30 April. Tours only run once enough whale sharks are confirmed inside the zone over consecutive days. Recent seasons have opened in mid-November, and tours have been suspended mid-season when numbers dropped. December to March has been the most consistent. Ask us for the current status before booking flights around the edges.
Can you scuba dive with whale sharks in La Paz?
No. Mexican rules make it snorkel-only, whatever your certification. There is a practical reason behind the law: the sharks feed at the surface, and bubbles from a regulator turn them away. Socorro is the one place in Mexico where whale sharks show up on scuba, and there they are a lucky extra on a manta week.
How big are the whale sharks in La Paz Bay?
The bay is a nursery, so these are juveniles. Usually four to seven metres. Still far bigger than anything else you will swim next to, but not the twelve-metre adult from the photos. Larger animals, including pregnant females, turn up elsewhere in the Sea of Cortez, mostly in spring.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
It helps a lot. The sharks move faster than they look, and each pass is a short sprint before the animal pulls away. No certification is needed and the water is calm and shallow. But people who swim well get more time alongside them.
Where else in Baja can I see whale sharks?
Bahía de los Ángeles, in the northern Sea of Cortez. It peaks September to November, filling the gap while La Paz waits to open. It is remote, so liveaboards through the Midriff Islands are the usual way in. Socorro, offshore from San José del Cabo, produces occasional sightings on scuba from November to May.
Is the encounter ethical?
La Paz runs one of the tightest systems anywhere. A capped licensed fleet, limited swimmers per animal, set distances, a no-touch rule, and a season that closes itself when numbers fall. Nothing is baited. The sharks come to feed on their own schedule. Booking with a permit-holding operator keeps you inside that system, and it is the only version we sell.
