For European divers the flights are longer than Egypt — that’s the real barrier, not the diving. The marine life is accessible for OWD+ divers on most sites. If it’s your first liveaboard and easy logistics matter, Egypt is simpler and closer. If your specific goal is whale sharks or sea lion diving in the Pacific, La Paz is the right call. We’re happy to walk you through both options before you decide.
Can you scuba dive with whale sharks in La Paz?
No. Mexican law requires snorkel-only interaction at whale shark sites in La Paz Bay. No scuba tanks, and some protected zones also prohibit fins. You enter the water from a small panga boat and free-swim alongside them at the surface. This applies to every operator — there are no exceptions. The whale sharks are large enough that this still produces very good encounters.
What month gives the best combination of species?
October is the most common answer. Whale sharks start arriving in the bay, mobula rays are still present around Espiritu Santo, the summer heat is starting to ease and the sea is calmer than August. November gives higher whale shark numbers but rays are mostly gone by then. July–August maximises rays and hammerheads but the Sea of Cortez is at its roughest. Sea lions are there regardless of month.
Which airport should I fly into for a La Paz liveaboard?
La Paz (LAP) is 15 minutes from the marina — straightforward, no transfer stress. Los Cabos (SJD) has more international connections from Europe but adds a 2-hour drive. Which one is better depends on your routing and which boat you’re on. Ask us with your departure city and we’ll tell you which airport your liveaboard departs from and which flights work.
Do I need Advanced Open Water for La Paz?
Not for most sites. Los Islotes (sea lions), Espiritu Santo walls (mobula rays) and Los Candeleros are all accessible with Open Water certification. El Bajo — the hammerhead seamount — requires AOWD and comfort in current. If El Bajo is on your list, get your AOWD before you go. It determines whether you can access the best dive on the whole itinerary.
How reliable are the mobula ray aggregations?
More consistent than most pelagic encounters, but not guaranteed. Peak window is July to September around Espiritu Santo. Within that window, most boats see rays on most dives. Outside of it, rays are spotted occasionally. Whale sharks are more predictable: November to February, multiple animals in the bay most days. If rays are your main target and you’re flexible on dates, July–August is the right call.
