Nautilus Explorer is a 35-metre steel liveaboard built in 2000 and refitted in 2018, with upgrades every year since. She carries up to 25 guests in 13 cabins: a premium suite and three superior suites on the upper deck, six staterooms and a triple on the lower deck, and two single staterooms. The singles are a real plus for solo divers. The boat is built for remote, exposed diving. Zodiacs handle drop-offs, there's dedicated gear storage and custom camera stations, and after a cold dive you can warm up under a deck shower or in the hot tub. Nitrox is available, and Wi-Fi is on board. Between dives, the crew run zodiac trips, marine life talks, kayaking and paddleboarding. Her diving areas are some of the best big-animal sites in the Pacific. The Revillagigedo islands (Socorro) have giant oceanic mantas, humpback whales from around January to April, dolphins and several shark species, with the season running from November to May. Guadalupe Island is known for cage diving with great white sharks, usually from August to November. The Sea of Cortez has sea lions, whale sharks and mobulas, mainly in summer. Expect cool water, swell, current and long crossings. Advanced Open Water and solid recent experience are a good idea. Nautilus Explorer suits experienced divers, photographers and solo travellers.

Nautilus Explorer suited the expedition style of the trip very well. The boat felt stable during the crossings, the dive deck was genuinely spacious and there were comfortable areas to relax when we were not in the water. I would choose it again for either Socorro or one of the Sea of Cortez diving routes.
The crew worked constantly without making the service feel formal. Tanks were ready, cameras were handled carefully and snacks seemed to appear exactly when everyone became hungry.
The wildlife at Socorro was impressive, but it never felt guaranteed. We had dives where the larger animals stayed away, and those dives were still enjoyable because of the volcanic scenery, reef fish and the feeling of being somewhere extremely remote.
Hot chocolate and the hot tub after the last dive became part of the routine. Very easy to get used to.
