Certification, currents and getting there

The practical differences that actually decide which trip to book first.

Certification — Raja Ampat Open Water works for most sites — Manta Sandy, Melissa’s Garden, Arborek Jetty. AOWD recommended for Cape Kri and Blue Magic.
Certification — Komodo AOWD minimum for Castle Rock, Crystal Rock and the strongest Batu Bolong dives. Open Water suits Siaba Besar, Tatawa Besar/Kecil and Manta Point on lighter tides.

Questions we get every week

Can a beginner dive Raja Ampat?
Yes — a good share of Raja Ampat’s best sites, including Manta Sandy, Melissa’s Garden and Arborek Jetty, sit in mild current and shallow depth, so Open Water divers can join comfortably. The two sites that ask for more experience are Cape Kri and Blue Magic, where current can pick up fast; a guide will usually hold beginners back on the stronger tide windows and route the group to a calmer site instead. If you’re newly certified, tell your operator when booking so they can build the week around your level.
Do I need Advanced certification for Komodo?
For the signature current sites — Castle Rock, Crystal Rock and the strongest tides at Batu Bolong — yes, AOWD is the practical minimum, and most operators ask for logged dive experience with reef hooks. That said, Komodo isn’t only advanced diving: Siaba Besar, Tatawa Besar, Tatawa Kecil and the Cauldron on lighter tides are all manageable for Open Water divers with solid buoyancy, and Manta Point runs current gentle enough for newer divers most days.
Can I dive both Raja Ampat and Komodo on one trip?
It’s possible but demanding — the two parks sit at opposite ends of Indonesia with no direct flight between them, so you’re routing through Jakarta or Bali either way, which eats a day or two of transit on each end. Divers who want both usually treat them as two separate trips rather than one combined itinerary, often a year or two apart, since each destination alone already fills a 7–10 night liveaboard.
When do the two seasons overlap?
Raja Ampat’s calmest window runs October to April, while Komodo’s dry season runs April to November — so the two overlap in October, November and April. Outside that overlap, each destination is effectively in its own separate season, which is worth checking against your travel dates before choosing.
Which destination has better manta encounters?
It depends what you’re after. Komodo has more resident mantas overall — over 1,000 individuals working the cleaning stations at Karang Makassar and Manta Alley — with strong sightings most days in season. Raja Ampat’s cleaning stations at Manta Sandy and Blue Magic see fewer individual mantas but in calmer, more photograph-friendly conditions, particularly November to April.
Are Komodo dragons actually part of the dive trip?
On a liveaboard, yes — most Komodo itineraries build in a land excursion to Rinca or Komodo Island between dives, with a ranger-guided walk to see dragons in their natural habitat. It’s one of the few places in the world where a wildlife encounter this significant sits directly alongside world-class diving, and it’s a genuine point of difference from Raja Ampat, which has no land-based equivalent.
