Hanifaru Bay is a small bay in Baa Atoll, in the north of the Maldives. From June to November, tides push plankton into the bay, and dozens of manta rays, sometimes more than a hundred, come in to feed. The bay is snorkel-only, so non-divers get the same encounter as divers. A liveaboard adds the manta cleaning stations of Baa Atoll on scuba.

FAQ

Hanifaru Bay Manta Questions

When is manta season at Hanifaru Bay?
June to November. Feeding is usually strongest around the full and new moon, when the tides are biggest. Mantas are wild, so sightings are never guaranteed.
Can I scuba dive in Hanifaru Bay?
No. The bay has been snorkel-only for over a decade to protect the mantas. On a liveaboard you scuba dive the cleaning stations nearby, like Dhigu Thila and Nelivaru Thila.
Do I need to be a diver to see the mantas?
No. You only need to snorkel comfortably in open water. That makes Hanifaru one of the best manta trips for mixed groups of divers and non-divers.
What are the rules in the bay?
Rangers limit how many people are in the water and for how long, and there’s an entry fee. Keep your distance from the mantas, don’t touch them and don’t use flash. Your guide briefs you before every visit.
What’s the weather like from June to November?
It’s the southwest monsoon, so expect some rain, wind and choppier crossings. The water stays around 28–30°C, and the plankton that comes with the monsoon is what brings the mantas.
How do I get there?
Fly into Malé (MLE). Most Hanifaru trips start in Malé and sail north to Baa Atoll. We confirm the start point and transfer for your dates.
