South Ari Atoll, in the centre of the Maldives, is one of the few places in the world where whale sharks are seen all year. Most are young males cruising the outer reef between Maamigili and Dhigurah, often close to the surface. On the same week you dive manta cleaning stations and coral pinnacles. For the full guide, read our South Ari article.

Whale sharks are in South Ari all year, but they’re wild, so sightings are never guaranteed. The side of the atoll where they feed shifts with the monsoon, and your guide follows them. Water stays around 28–30°C. Keep your distance, don’t touch them and don’t use flash.

FAQ

South Ari Whale Shark Questions

Can I see whale sharks in South Ari all year?
Yes. South Ari has a resident population, mostly young males, seen in every month. Sightings happen on most trips, but they’re never guaranteed.
Do I snorkel or dive with the whale sharks?
Both. Whale sharks often swim near the surface, so many encounters happen on snorkel. Non-divers on the boat can join those.
What are the rules for swimming with whale sharks?
South Ari is a marine protected area. Keep your distance, don’t touch or chase the shark, and don’t use flash. Your guide briefs you before every encounter.
Can I see manta rays in South Ari too?
Yes. Rangali Madivaru is a manta cleaning station, and mantas show up when the current is right. Your guide reads the conditions day by day.
What experience do I need?
Open Water is enough for the whale shark area and most reef dives. Sites like Kudarah Thila have stronger current and are easier with Advanced Open Water.
Is South Ari crowded?
It can be, because day boats from resorts visit the same area. Liveaboards stay overnight nearby and often reach the whale shark strip earlier in the day.
