The route

Where South Ari Atoll sits

South Ari (Alifu Dhaalu) sits in the central Maldives, a short sail from Malé — most liveaboard routes reach it within the first day or two.

Protected outer reef running from Maamigili in the west to Dhigurah in the east — the corridor behind almost every whale shark and manta sighting in the atoll.

Sites sit on channels and thilas where current pulls nutrients past the reef — that current is what draws the big animals in.

Best months for whale sharks and mantas

South Ari doesn’t have an off-season for whale sharks — but where you’re most likely to see them shifts with the monsoon.

Season What to expect
Northeast Monsoon
Dec–Apr
Whale sharks more often reported on the western side, near Maamigili. Dry-season conditions: 25–35m visibility, calmer seas. Manta cleaning stations stay active — current-dependent rather than seasonal.
Southwest Monsoon
May–Nov
Plankton blooms pull whale sharks toward the eastern side, near Dhigurah. August–October is peak season, with multiple sightings a day common. More rain and chop possible.

Sightings are reported on the large majority of trips year-round — never guaranteed. And this isn’t the manta feeding aggregation at Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll, which is a different atoll running on a different, seasonal pattern.

Whale sharks year-round, best odds August–October.

Dive sites inside the South Ari MPA

Five sites cover most of what divers come to South Ari for — from near-daily whale sharks to manta cleaning stations and one of the Maldives’ better wrecks.

Maamigili Reef Open Water
5–15m · mild–moderate current

The whale shark magnet of the atoll — sightings inside the marine park are reported on most days, close to the local airport at Maamigili.

Kudarah Thila AOWD / Advanced
10–20m · moderate–strong current

A pinnacle with overhangs and soft coral, and South Ari’s classic manta cleaning station. Whale sharks pass through here too.

Rangali Madivaru AOWD / Advanced
Channel site · current-driven

Sits on the outflow of Rangali Kandu — nutrient-rich water that draws both mantas and whale sharks.

Vilamendhoo Thila All levels
Coral pinnacle

Turtles and whitetip reef sharks over healthy coral — a good rest-day dive between the bigger sites.

Machchafushi Wreck Open Water
Wreck dive

A small wreck carpeted in coral and reef fish — one of the better wrecks in the Maldives for the depth.

Certification, conditions and logistics

What to know before picking a South Ari route.

Topic Detail
Certification Open Water covers most sites, including Maamigili, Vilamendhoo and the wreck. Advanced Open Water is recommended for Kudarah Thila and Rangali Madivaru, where current picks up.
Conditions Water temperature runs 27–30°C year-round. Visibility is best December–April; expect more plankton — and more life — May–November.
Getting there Fly into Malé (Velana International Airport, VIA). Most South Ari liveaboards embark from Malé or a short domestic connection — confirm the exact meeting point with your route.
Marine park rules SAMPA sets minimum distances and swimmer limits around whale sharks: no touching, no flash photography. Dive guides brief the rules before every encounter.

FAQ

Questions we get every week

Do I need a certification to dive with whale sharks in South Ari?
Open Water Diver covers most of South Ari’s whale shark sites, including Maamigili. Sites like Kudarah Thila and Rangali Madivaru run more current, so Advanced Open Water is recommended there. Confirm your certification against the specific route before booking.
Are whale shark sightings guaranteed?
No — nothing in the wild is guaranteed. South Ari is one of the only places with a resident, year-round juvenile population, and operators report sightings on the large majority of trips, but no guide can promise a specific encounter.
Is this the same as the manta feeding aggregation at Hanifaru Bay?
No. Hanifaru Bay is in Baa Atoll, a separate part of the Maldives, and its manta gathering is seasonal, roughly May to November. South Ari’s whale sharks and manta cleaning stations run on a different pattern — present through the year, with numbers shifting by monsoon rather than switching on and off.
When are mantas most active at South Ari’s cleaning stations?
Reef mantas at Kudarah Thila and Rangali Madivaru follow the current more than the calendar. Your dive guide reads the tides day by day rather than working off a fixed season — ask us for the latest read before you book.
Is nitrox available on South Ari liveaboard routes?
Availability varies by boat — we’ll confirm nitrox access for your specific route before you book.
Can I combine South Ari with shark diving elsewhere in the Maldives?
Yes — several routes pair South Ari with Fuvahmulah, a few hours south, where tiger and thresher sharks are resident year-round. Read our full guide to Fuvahmulah for what that route adds.
