Every Maldives dive site falls into one of two categories, and the category determines the current.
Kandu (Channel) Diving

A kandu is a break in the atoll rim where ocean water floods in and out with the tide. That flow is what pulls mantas, sharks and schooling fish through in predictable numbers.
Thila (Pinnacle) Diving
INTERMEDIATE
5–25m · Light–moderate current · Reef hook useful
A thila is a submerged reef pinnacle rising from the lagoon floor, often topped with a cleaning station. Current is generally gentler than in a kandu, making it a common second dive of the day.
North Atolls

A liveaboard repositions overnight, covering several atolls in one trip. A resort is tied to its house reef and nearby thilas within boat range.
Certification & experience
Channel diving generally calls for AOWD and comfort in current; some operators ask for a minimum number of logged dives too. Requirements vary by boat and by site — confirm with your operator.
Current & drift diving
Most channel dives are planned as drifts with a current-side entry and a downstream pickup by dhoni or dinghy — swimming back against the flow isn’t the plan.
Surface marker buoy
An SMB is standard on channel dives, both for the boat to track the group and to signal other traffic crossing the channel mouth.
Non-diving companions
A resort suits a mixed group better — non-divers have a room, a beach and activities. A liveaboard is built around the dive schedule first.
Environmental fees
The Maldives applies a Green Tax and, on some routes, atoll or marine-park entry fees. These are generally separate from the booking price — we can confirm current amounts for your itinerary.

There isn’t one single best month — it depends on which species and atolls you’re prioritizing. The NE monsoon (roughly December–April) tends to bring calmer seas and clearer water on the eastern side of the atolls, while the SW monsoon (roughly May–November) drives the manta feeding at Hanifaru Bay. Ask us for the current picture before choosing your dates.
Will I see whale sharks on a Maldives liveaboard?
South Ari Atoll hosts a resident population of mostly juvenile male whale sharks, so sightings run close to year-round rather than on a migratory schedule. No sighting is ever guaranteed with a wild species, but a route that includes South Ari gives you a genuine shot most weeks of the year.
What’s the difference between a kandu and a thila?
A kandu is a channel where the atoll rim breaks open to the ocean, creating the strongest currents and the biggest pelagic encounters. A thila is a submerged pinnacle rising from the lagoon floor, generally calmer, often used for cleaning-station dives with mantas or reef sharks. Most itineraries mix both site types across a trip.
Do I need Advanced certification for Maldives currents?
Most operators expect Advanced Open Water and comfort with drift diving for channel dives, since current can run moderate to strong and dives are planned around a downstream pickup rather than swimming back to the mooring. Thila dives are generally more forgiving. Exact requirements vary by boat — we can confirm what a specific operator needs.
Liveaboard vs. resort — which is better for diving in the Maldives?
A liveaboard covers more atolls and more channel diving in one trip, since the boat repositions overnight. A resort stays anchored to its house reef and nearby thilas, which suits a mixed group better if a non-diver is joining. Neither is objectively better — it depends on how much of the atoll chain you want to see.
Which atolls should I choose for a first Maldives trip?
