What it’s actually like.
Phocea Mexico is a 20-year-old, owner-operated PADI 5-Star Career Development Center with sister branches in Playa del Carmen and Cozumel, plus a dedicated cenote program. It suits divers who want variety from one trusted operator — reef and wreck diving in Playa, world-class walls in Cozumel, and cavern diving in the cenotes — without juggling three separate bookings. The trade-off is logistics: Cozumel requires a ferry crossing, several signature dives demand Advanced certification, and the seasonal itineraries don’t bundle accommodation, so budget that separately.

A hydrogen sulfide cloud at 30m — only at Cenote Angelita, Advanced certified divers only.

Dive sites
Where you’ll dive
Hawksbill, green and loggerhead turtles year-round, plus barracuda and seasonal eagle rays. One of Playa’s most reliable turtle sites.
A finger-shaped reef with sheltered bays. Lobsters, crabs and giant moray eels in the calm pockets between current runs.
A 1995 shrimp boat sunk as an artificial reef. Groupers, barracuda schools and turtles; bull sharks possible in winter.
A static observation dive with up to 15 pregnant bull sharks circling freely around the group. Seasonal, Nov–Mar only.
Cozumel’s signature reef — giant coral formations, caves and canyons stretching over 5km, named “Underwater Garden of Eden” by Jacques Cousteau.
A dramatic drop-off wall with huge sponges, overhangs and tunnels. Cozumel’s second most popular drift dive.
Dense, colorful and unhurried — seahorses, flamingo tongues and Cozumel’s endemic splendid toadfish. Usually the relaxed second dive of the day.
Cenote program
Cavern diving in the underground rivers
Chac Mool and Dos Ojos are Open Water-friendly, with light beams, haloclines and natural air domes at depths of 12–14m. El Pit and Cenote Angelita go deeper — 30–40m, requiring Advanced certification — for the famous light shafts and the hydrogen sulfide cloud. All cenote dives include transport, lunch, fruit and water; chemical sunscreen is banned by Quintana Roo state law, so only biodegradable, reef-safe sunscreen is permitted.

Seasonality
When to go

Apr–Jun: Transition season — warming water, fewer crowds, cenotes and Cozumel diving at their most relaxed.

Something different?
What about staying on a liveaboard instead?
A liveaboard reaches more remote Mexican Caribbean and Pacific sites without daily transfers between Playa, Cozumel and the cenotes, often fitting in more dives per day than a land-based, multi-location schedule.
