Dive sites

Where you’ll dive

Three core site types around La Paz Bay and Espíritu Santo / Los Islotes.

Los Islotes

Beginner-friendly · Open Water+

~10–20m · generally mild current

Sea lion colony with more than 600 animals — one of the most reliable sea lion encounters in the Sea of Cortez. Pups are often the most playful, approaching divers directly.

Shipwrecks

Beginner-friendly · Open Water+

~20m average · generally mild current

Sunk deliberately to create artificial reefs, now covered in marine growth and visited by turtles and schooling fish. Suitable for all certified levels.

Coral Reefs

Beginner-friendly · Open Water+

~10–20m · generally mild current

Reef sites with schooling fish, nudibranchs, moray eels, and rays. Visibility varies by season — see below.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Do I need a certification to dive at Carey?
Yes — Open Water Diver or higher, with no minimum number of logged dives required. If you’re not certified, ask us about combining a dive course with your trip.
Are sea lion or whale shark sightings guaranteed?
Sea lions at Los Islotes are seen on nearly every visit, year-round. Whale sharks visit La Paz Bay October–April — not guaranteed, but very common in season, with roughly 30 individuals visiting yearly.
Is swimming with whale sharks safe?
Yes — it’s a surface snorkeling activity, not scuba, done under guide supervision after a 15-minute boat ride to the bay. Whale sharks are filter feeders and pose no threat to swimmers.
What does a typical diving day look like?
Breakfast at Villa Carey at 7am, transfer to the dive center at 7:30am, departure for 2 dives at 8am, with a beach break and lunch in between. Return to Villa Carey by 2–3pm, afternoons free.
Is Nitrox available?
Yes — Nitrox 32 is included free of charge with every diving package, along with weights.
Can I rent dive gear, or should I bring my own?
Equipment rental is available on-site but isn’t included in the package price. Bringing your own gear is welcome if you have it.
How do I get to La Paz?
Fly into La Paz International Airport (LAP), usually connecting through Mexico City or Tijuana from Europe. Airport-to-Villa Carey transfers, both ways, are included in every package.
What’s the cancellation policy?
Exact cancellation terms aren’t published online — we’ll confirm the operator’s current policy with you in writing before you pay anything.
What extra costs should I budget for?
Equipment rental (if you don’t bring your own), mandatory dive insurance, international flights, local taxes, and crew gratuities are not included in the package price.
Do you offer group discounts?
Special group conditions apply for 10+ divers, including a welcome buffet, commemorative video, and farewell BBQ. Contact us for an exact group quote.

Something different?

What about staying on a liveaboard instead?

A liveaboard puts you closer to remote sites with more dives per day, instead of a land base with daily boat transfers. Mexico offers liveaboard itineraries beyond what a shore-based operator like Carey can reach.
