Caves, Coral & Dolphins: St John’s & Deep South Liveaboards

Year-roundSpinner dolphinsOpen Water friendly
Book Liveaboards →

The Deep South is the quiet end of Egypt, close to the border with Sudan. Fewer boats come this far, so the hard coral is in great shape. You swim through the caves of St John’s, dive the coral gardens of Fury Shoal, and snorkel with spinner dolphins in the Sataya lagoon. Only liveaboards can take you there.

Deep South trips run all year. Water is about 23°C in winter and 29°C in summer. Spinner dolphins usually rest in the Sataya lagoon during the day, but they’re wild, so sightings are never guaranteed. You meet them snorkelling, without chasing or touching them.

FAQ

St John’s and Deep South Questions

When is the best time to dive the Deep South?
You can dive it all year. Water is about 23°C in winter and 29°C in summer. Bring a 5 mm wetsuit in winter and a 3 mm in summer.
Can I swim with dolphins in the Deep South?
Yes, by snorkelling. Spinner dolphins usually rest in the Sataya lagoon during the day. You swim quietly at the surface and never chase or touch them. They’re wild, so sightings are never guaranteed.
What experience do I need?
Open Water is enough for Fury Shoal and most of St John’s. Rocky Island has strong current and is better with Advanced Open Water. Send us your certification and dive count, and we’ll pick the right route.
What is St John’s Reef?
A group of reefs in the far south of Egypt, near the Sudan border. It’s known for shallow caves, swim-throughs and healthy hard coral, and it sees far fewer boats than the north.
Where do Deep South trips leave from?
Most leave from Port Ghalib or Hamata, south of Marsa Alam. Fly into Marsa Alam (RMF) or Hurghada (HRG). We confirm the port and transfer for your dates.
Is the Deep South good for non-divers?
Yes, more than most routes. The reefs are shallow and calm, and the dolphin lagoon is snorkel-only. Non-divers usually pay a lower rate. Ask us for the price on your boat.
