Los Islotes holds a resident colony of roughly 250–400 animals, most playful with divers June through November. Adults keep more distance during pupping season.

When is the best time to see whale sharks in Baja California?
October through April, with the strongest concentration December to March. Whale sharks gather in La Paz Bay to feed on plankton, and encounters are snorkel only under Mexican law — no scuba is permitted with them in the bay. The rest of the year they move to different feeding grounds and sightings in La Paz drop off almost entirely, so if this is your target species, book within that window.
When do hammerhead sharks show up at El Bajo?
Hammerheads are present at El Bajo most of the year — schooling size depends on current strength on any given day more than a fixed calendar window, and reports vary between operators and seasons. If a specific month matters to you, ask us to check recent trip reports before you book. Socorro, further south, is more predictable: it’s a fixed November to May liveaboard season with consistently good hammerhead sightings throughout.
Is Socorro (Revillagigedo) diving open year-round?
No. Liveaboard sailings to the Revillagigedo archipelago typically run November through May. Outside that window the crossing and diving conditions aren’t viable for the multi-day liveaboards that access the site — there’s no day-boat option, since Socorro sits roughly 24 hours by boat from the mainland. Confirm exact season dates with us before booking, as they can shift slightly year to year.
What certification do I need for Baja California diving?
Open Water Diver is enough for Los Islotes and Cabo Pulmo, both shallow, low-current sites. El Bajo requires AOWD and genuine comfort in strong current — this isn’t a site to learn drift diving on. Socorro liveaboards generally expect AOWD with 50 or more logged dives, since conditions are open ocean with no easy bailout. Check the specific boat’s requirement before booking, as it varies by operator.
How cold is the water in Baja California?
It swings more than most tropical dive destinations. December through April, water temperature sits around 18–21°C and a 5–7mm wetsuit or drysuit is standard. June through October it warms to 26–29°C, where a 3mm or shortie is enough. If you’re diving across a shoulder season, pack layers rather than assuming one wetsuit thickness covers the whole trip.
Can I dive Baja California as a beginner?
Yes, at the right sites. Los Islotes and Cabo Pulmo are both suitable for Open Water divers, with mild current and depths under 25m. El Bajo and Socorro are not beginner sites — both demand comfort in strong current and, for Socorro, open-ocean liveaboard experience. April to June is generally the easiest window for newer divers: seas are calmer and water is warming, before peak hammerhead current season sets in at El Bajo.
