Cenderawasih Bay is a large, sheltered bay in the north of West Papua, Indonesia. At Kwatisore, whale sharks come to the bagans, wooden fishing platforms where fishermen share small fish with them. You can dive or snorkel with them in calm, shallow water. The bay also has WWII wrecks and reefs that few divers see.

FAQ

Cenderawasih Bay Whale Shark Questions

When can I see whale sharks in Cenderawasih Bay?
Whale sharks visit the bagans all year. Liveaboard trips run mainly in the middle of the year, and our partner boat goes in July and August.
Are sightings guaranteed?
No. Sightings are very likely because the whale sharks come to the fishing platforms, but they are wild animals.
What is a bagan?
A wooden fishing platform. The fishermen catch small fish at night, and whale sharks come to feed on what they share.
Do I need to be an experienced diver?
No. The whale shark dives are shallow and calm, so Open Water divers and snorkellers can join.
Can I combine it with Raja Ampat?
Yes. Some trips run Cenderawasih Bay and Raja Ampat North together.
Where do trips leave from?
It depends on the route, often Sorong or Nabire in West Papua. We confirm the port and flights for your dates.
